Geologic processes pose problems for the Rhode Island shore.

Abstract: A severe coastal storm can cause considerable modification
of the beach front. Storm waves erode the foredunes and bluffs and carry
the sediment offshore and alongshore to breachways. High surges from large
coastal storms and hurricanes transport sediments from the beach and foredune
onto the back of the barrier, resulting in upward and landward gain in
these areas as the ocean front is eroded. The primary response to destruction
caused by beach erosion presently is to pay the flood insurance when buildings
are destroyed. Over the long term, however, much more must be done to
strengthen set-back requirements and construction rules for new buildings.
Additionally, a concentrated effort is needed for local, state, and federal
government to buy property and thus break the cycle of building, destruction,
payment, and rebuilding.
